The Chapati Hustle

Image
Ram was fixated on eating sambar and aloo fry all his life, and when he was a bachelor, he used to run errands around curry points. But when the lockdown was enforced, all the curry points were shut, leaving him with no option but to cook. As part of his cooking journey, he decided to learn how to make chapati. It took him nearly six months to master making a properly shaped chapati, at least one that was identifiable. During this chapati-making hustle, his attempts sometimes resembled a Chinese map, and other times, a Russian map. His roommates would tease him, saying, "Are you trying to send some corona genome sequences as cryptic messages to China or what?" Since Ram had embarked on his fitness journey, he preferred chapati for dinner every night, while his wife Ayyira preferred rice. Ayyira complained that if she ate chapati, her tummy would demand a second meal at midnight, and it would be Ram's sole responsibility to fulfill her hunger if he suggested having chapati...

Love in inverted schedule

Image
Ram and Ayyira have been married for nearly a year, and in just 10 days, they'll celebrate their first anniversary. They both work in the software industry, but their work schedules are quite different. Ram's work hours follow the usual 9-5 routine, while Ayyira's shift begins at 9, but during a different part of the day. In the beginning, they faced challenges in finding a common time to spend quality moments together. However, it didn't take them long to discover the beauty of love within their inverted schedules. They did have their fair share of arguments and disagreements, watching the newly released movie on matinee or evening show, and going out for lunch or dinner, but the remarkable aspect of their relationship was that they always resolved these issues before bedtime. Netflix and chill, Swiggy and bill. Occasionally, Ayyira had the opportunity to work from home. Before she logged in, Ram would sit beside her, sharing the events of his day. In return, she would...

The girl with a pawesome tattoo

It’s the fourth Saturday, yay!!, my rat-racing fat ass finally got some time to write a story. I started to type. Newton’s first law states that a body stays at rest until and unless an external force acts on it, likewise life goes calmer and ordinary in a single direction until love happens, it is a magical external force that could make one’s life extraordinary. “Bro she broke up with me”, my friend interrupted. Damn it, not again, I am just about to write and process a good feel about love and here is my friend standing in front of me with 180 deg flip experience, universe conspiracies with my writing process, I groaned. I closed the laptop lid and turned to him. “Go on, I am all ears”, I sighed. “We were in a 2-year relation and now she says that I am not giving her space and it is not working anymore between us”, he said and started to sob. Poor girl she took this long to figure out, this guy is toxic when it comes to relationships, anyways he is my best friend so I had to listen ...

A Fictional Doctor #10

When the pandemic broke out, the majority of the population had no absolute clue what was about to unfold for the next two years and how it would put them in uncharted territory, which would further change their lives forever. This third wave is no different. You keep saying to yourself, eh, tomorrow it’ll be over. Tomorrow it’ll be over, it’ll be over, but It’s been weeks since she took over the duty. We did have some joyful moments in the beginning days, she would send me the dance reels on IG, and I learnt them and taught her on a video call. We watched movies on Netflix watch party, It used to be fun. We only hope to dance together to a trendy song when all this is over. Doctors who are the forefront warriors of this battle had put their own lives at risk with selfless determination for the sake of saving lives; they indeed are our heroes in these challenging times. While they are putting their health, families, and, most importantly, their own lives at risk, the least we can do is...

A Fictional Doctor #9

Well, If you had told me a year ago that I would cook myself, I would have laughed at it, but after two waves and a couple of lockdowns, here I am, from cooking veggies to grilling chicken, of course, thanks to the lockdown, of all the damages it has done, it has taught me the self-care, and yes the survival. I classify cooking as self-care, not for the right amount of oil and hygiene we could control, but it does something more than that; here is something I would like to quote from that Reddit user posted.         " Self-care should not be something we resort to because we are so absolutely exhausted that we need some reprieve from our own relentless internal pressure. True self-care is not salt baths and chocolate cake, it is making the choice to build a life you don’t need to regularly escape from. And that often takes doing the thing you least want to do." Cooking is not something I learned quickly, and it took a fair amount of...

Like people struggle with an after-party hangover, you will have to hustle to finish up the work files piled at the end of the year. Well, thanks to the remote working possibility, we can at least pick the places of work. Roonie and I like to spend time without ever hampering our work lives, yeah this may sound funny, but our beloved ones want the best of us, right?. On weekdays it's hard to find time for us, mainly occupied with work but when we feel like meeting we would just send a single word message the way you communicate with a pager machine, and all it says is, 'work date'. The good thing about modern restaurants and cafes is that you could spend hours just paying bills for a sip of a coffee, in contrast to our traditional hotels where the waiter would stare at you, wanting you to leave the place when you ask for the extra chutney. But, of course, that coffee costs a fortune; no wonder entrepreneurs made a business model out of it, but in the end, convenience matte...

Earth is around 4.5 billion years old, a timescale I simply cannot get my head around, and here we are celebrating the 12,022. Well, that’s the calendar I like to follow. So, anyways, happy New year, folks; we made it here. My new year’s Eve would mostly be ‘ME’, lying on my bed reading Kindle and welcoming the new year by sipping a cool drink. Yeah, it sounds boring, but that’s how it’s been, and I enjoyed every bit of it. So I call it ‘ME’ time. This time my friends from dance class had planned a trip to the nearest resort, and Roonie was going to join the party, so I signed up immediately. What else could make someone happier than welcoming the new year with a particular person beside you? It takes a 2 to 3-hour ride from our place to reach the resort. We counted 20 people, assembled at our dance class and divided them into three cars. Roonie sat next to me in my vehicle. It’s just a day trip. So why are they bringing bags of luggage? I wondered as they loaded tons of luggage on to...

Roonie has been away for a week now, and it is the truest test of time. I woke up excited every day and waited the whole day to see her in dance class, but knowing that she was not around made me desperate. I wish Quantum teleportation were a thing right now so that I could transport to her place in an instant, anyways; thanks to Technology, we were virtually connected all day. We hung out on video call for hours, she showed me her home around, and the waffle showed up wiggling his tail each time I called her, such a naughty messy boy he is. Roonie returned after 14400 minutes. If you are wondering, that’s ten days, well, that is how I counted for her. Nothing beats the feeling of seeing her after a matter of weeks apart, and I’m happy that we’re done with that part of our lives. Everyone loves surprises, and getting one from your special ones is ineffable. Roonie brought the famous Chicken pickle from her home town for me. “How are the pickles?” she texted. “Yes, good, they are sp...

A fictional Doctor #5

Roonie showed me around her classrooms block, the Laboratories she had to spend hours in and her lunch eating spot. Then, finally, we reached the fest venue, and the auditorium filled with people and they burst out like rain clattering on an empty shed. She excused herself and left to meet her friends. I sat there watching the performances and some random speeches, which I am uninterested in. It was fun but felt irrelevant. I waited desperately for her to return. She came back and brought her friends along, she introduced me to everyone, and she is a charm in making people comfortable around her. She boosted me to her friends, which is overwhelming. I mean, who wouldn’t. We moved to the food section and started to have a random conversation with her friends, honestly, though I felt secluded, topics of interest, you know. “Hey you have put on some weight, and this look didn’t match you much”, one of her friends commented on her. How dare he talk to my girl like that? I would have strai...

A fictional Doctor #4

It's been three months since we were known as friends, we exchanged our interests and followed each other on socials. They say there is nothing such as static; likewise, she doesn’t seem like a person I could put in my logical bubble of mine. Instead, her soul is a universe of understanding. In our ever-connected world, we often feel isolated, but chatting with her makes my day. Honestly, switching chats between IG and WhatsApp with her is a multiverse way of communicating. The former goes with memes and the latter with stickers. And I must admit, She is damn good at stickers games and made me feel like I'm already old for WhatsApp too. I already ousted myself from using snap, and of course, Tinder too. It is like alien tech used for extraterrestrial communication. That’s what I feel, at least. I usually turn off the notifications for apps but setting a custom ringtone for her chat made me a teenager all over again. I'm sure developers of Android will go haywire if they see...
